Meet Keri Rosebraugh: Visual Artist....
We had the good fortune of connecting with Keri Rosebraugh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Keri, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
If I am really passionate about something I don’t give up- even if it isn’t working. A piece will gnaw at me until it gets resolved. When I begin a new project I approach it with some idea of what I am trying to convey – conceptually as well as aesthetically. Many times the hardest part is the beginning: putting paint to a white canvas or that first chisel into wood. It takes time for me to develop a relationship with the piece. The more I put into it, the more this prompts a dialogue between the work and myself and eventually the best part is when the piece starts telling me what to do next. I don’t really stop until the elements are cohesive (I hope) and I feel like the discussion between the piece and myself is resolved. In answering this question in general, I just keep going. I mean even if someone gives up on something, another thing eventually pops up and then you’re off to the races again, right?
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is about human’s connection to the earth and how we are all related – how we are all one. My latest series consists of a deck of tarot cards created in a collaboration with shaman Rebecca Auman. Our intentions are to inspire connections with the earth and our alignment with nature encouraging communication with our surroundings while gaining insight into our stories -past, present and future. Each card is derived from the philosophy of the sublime: the meeting of the emotional and natural world. Our true self. My work is often ephemeral – a portal to access the temporary nature of things and a visit into one’s subconscious. If by creating a piece of art I can make a viewer think differently about something – see something in a new way, or spark a new thought or idea – if even for a minute or two – then I am happy.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite spot in Los Angeles used to be the rooftop of my loft in downtown until I was told if I continued to climb up there I would be evicted That being said, another great view of LA is from the helicopter pad in Griffith Park. It’s a fun hike and after a windy day the air is clear and one can see from downtown all the way to the ocean. I’d say I spend quite a bit of time at Bread Lounge, which I consider the best bakery on the east side. The olive bread is addictive. Other favorite spots in the city for me include the The Huntington Gardens, and the little outdoor cafe in Griffith Park called Trails, where you grab a coffee and sit on bales of hay. Not recommended for people with allergies. For art I love to frequent Hauser & Wirth, Nicodim Gallery, Wilding Cran Gallery and Kayne Griffin Corcoran.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
With much warmth I would like to give credit to a small group of strong women who unofficially form a creative think tank which I am fortunate to be a part of. I have been fortunate to collaborate with Rebecca Auman who is a renown corporate shaman and witch to create a deck of tarot cards called the Tarot of The Sublime. She introduced me to a group of women with completely different backgrounds, yet who share similar interests regarding the tarot. They have consulted me, inspired me and together we continue to launch critical thought and creativity on many levels. This is a shout out to my magical collective sisters: Rebecca Auman, Stacy Parson, Emily Lerner Amico, Emi A. Kolawole, and Denise Gamboa.
